Between the region of Colmar, which is one of the driest regions of France (in terms of the amount of precipitation - about 500 mm/year), and the “ballons” part of the Vosges mountains, the ratio is 1 to 4. This is a perfect illustration of the fœhn effect that protects the Alsatian plain from the prevailing western winds.
Winters are long and snowy, and mornings are almost as cool on the Alsatian plain as in the Vosges, while maximum temperatures vary greatly in the summer. The plain benefits from 40 to 50 warm days a year.
