Born in Kentucky (USA), Joe Downing belongs to a generation of American artists who came to France after the Second World War. Since his very first exhibition, at the Huit gallery of Paris in 1952, he was encouraged by Picasso. Like Jeanne Coppel, he exhibits to Paul Facchetti's home and joins in the Arnaud gallery with artists such as Hartung, Mathieu et Manessier...
The exhibition presents the donation which the Unterlinden museum has received and that contains more than 120 works of Joe Downing. He multiplies  the techniques to impose his "plastic instinct" in his work of a "lyrical" abstraction; on the one hand, his first "staplings on paper" exploit the geometrical volumes. On the other hand, his oils on canvas make patterns and colours litterally explode. He paints in oils and in watercolours and uses a large variety of materials; canvas, tiles, leather, paper, copper plates, wood or leather totems, painted volets, earthenware tiles, but also collage and lithographs...which are a proof of his incredible renewal capacity.
