The Koifhus was the old commercial and economic centre of Colmar and was completed in 1480. It is the oldest local public building in the city. The old balustrade, removed 20 years ago, is now restored, thus giving the Koïfhus its original appearance back. The ground floor was used as a warehouse and as a place of taxation on imported and exported merchandise. The first floor was a meeting room for the representatives of the Décapole, the federation of the ten imperial towns of Alsace, that was created in 1354.
